Volunteers must be 21 years or older and hold a valid driver’s license.

No experience is required—just empathy, reliability, and a desire to help capture what matters most.

What's It Like to Be A Legacy Coach

Getting to hear people's stories—where people have been, how different we are, and how we are all just interconnected in different ways—is very fascinating to me. This work has given me the gift of realizing that life is really precious.

Michelle, Legacy Coach

Qualities of a Great Legacy Coach

Legacy Coaches come from all backgrounds, but they must be 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s license. The volunteers who thrive in this role tend to share a few qualities:

Emotional maturity
You must be able to handle the weight and significance of capturing life stories of those with life-threatening illnesses.

Excellent interviewing and listening skills

You can offer conversation prompts without steering the narrative or overshadowing.

Humility

You understand your role is all about supporting the participant.

Collaboration and communication skills

You help participants feel at ease and are effective and efficient in the process.

Trustworthy
You understand the sensitivity of the stories being shared and uphold the highest confidentiality.

Respectful

You honor each participant’s pace, comfort level, and story. You respect the differences of participants, without criticism or judgement.

Training Materials

Legacy Coaches receive structured training, developed by an Executive Coach, that prepares them to support participants with confidence and care. You’ll learn how to create a welcoming environment, offer gentle prompts, and navigate emotional moments with steadiness and respect. Training is a blend of guided instruction and shadowing opportunities, so you never feel like you’re stepping into a session alone. Once you’re active, our team is always available for questions, debriefs, and ongoing support.

Time Commitment

Legacy Coaching is designed to fit into real life. Most filming takes place between 8:00-5:00pm Central time Monday through Friday, whether it is our quarterly Share Your Story events or our individual in-home sessions, with flexible scheduling based on your availability. Some volunteers join us monthly, others a few times a year—every contribution makes a meaningful difference. You choose the rhythm that works for you, and we’ll help you plug in where you feel most comfortable.
