A Legacy Coach’s Reflection: The Grief We Don’t Talk About

Catherine O., Legacy Coach

Dear Families,

We often talk about the grief families carry when someone they love is ill or gone. But there is another kind of grief I witness every time I sit with someone preparing to record their legacy video. It’s what researchers call the emotional reckoning that happens when someone knows their time is limited. It’s what I call the heart’s way of making meaning.

It’s not always spoken aloud. Sometimes it shows up in a short pause before answering a question, or in the way someone chooses a single word with extraordinary care. Sometimes it’s in the hope they express for their children, or the way they name the love they want their family to feel long after they’re gone. The difference is this grief isn’t about despair— it’s about meaning. It’s about wanting to leave clarity, comfort, and connection for the people they love most.

Legacy videos become a place where grief can be transformed. I’ve watched participants move from fear to courage, from heaviness to relief, simply because they had a space to say what their heart had been carrying.

Families often tell us their loved one’s legacy video helps them through their grief. What they may not realize is that the process helped their loved one through theirs, too. Witnessing that transformation is one of the greatest honors of my life.

With gratitude,

Catherine
