This Veterans Day, thanks to a generous sponsorship from 3G Foundation, five Central Iowa veterans with life-limiting illness will record their life stories, laughter, lessons, and love—at no cost. The one-day “Veteran Voices” event on November 11, produced in partnership with VA Central Iowa Health Care, brings Amadora Legacy Project’s volunteer Legacy Coaches and professional videographers together to record each veteran’s legacy video as a keepsake their families can return to for generations.
This exclusive filming event grew from a simple idea: bring the clinically proven benefits of life storytelling—improved mental health, strengthened identity, and deepened family connection—to more local veterans in appreciation of their service.
"One of the most profound moments I’ve ever had while filming legacy videos was recording a Vietnam veteran. I could feel the joy and relief he experienced by having the opportunity to tell his entire life story in his own words,” said Dr. Amy Hughes, Founder, Amadora Legacy Project. “It’s truly an honor to work with 3G Foundation and the VA to ensure more veteran life stories and legacies are saved for years to come.”
The Des Moines-based 3G Foundation provides philanthropic support for educational and community and economic development. “We are proud to support this meaningful event and the veterans it honors. We believe in strengthening the communities we serve, and helping save these stories is one way we can continue to give back,” said Casey Hansen, Chair of the Board, 3G Foundation.
How the Veteran Voices event works:
Veterans with life-limiting illness are referred by the VA Central Iowa Health Care for eligibility and scheduling. Five veterans were selected.
On the day of filming, each veteran receives guidance from a dedicated Legacy Coach, a privately filmed interview, and professional production.
Families receive copies of the finished film several weeks later.
Why families say it matters
For many relatives, a legacy video becomes one of the most meaningful gifts they ever receive—an emotional heirloom that can comfort during grief, teach grandchildren about family values, and safeguard stories that might otherwise be lost. The combination of professional production and compassionate coaching helps veterans tell their stories with ease.
Thanks to the sponsorship from 3G Foundation and the partnership with the VA Central Iowa Health Care, participating Central Iowa veterans will have their life stories saved with dignity, care, and professionalism.
